Due to the economic meltdown in Latvia, project had to be frozen for a while, but it gave architects time to re-think and try out many design ideas and variety of matherials. Architects prefer to be closely engaged with all the phases of completing a project, so after construction was finally started, the site was visited daily to review every development. It was decided to use red brick that tunes in the ensemble of surrounding buldings, and accent it with slightly assymetric chess-board pattern of black metal balconies and windows. After the structural walls were ready, brick samples were placed in window opening to examine the real-life view, in dayligh and at night. Each of the six apartments was designed to have an exclusive 270-degree view, and top floor apartment has a terrace with splendid sighting over Old Town. Facade was not to remain plain, and after numerous versions, architects decided to develop idea of using the shadowy silhouette of Bremen musicians – a bronze sculpture from riga’s twin city Bremen. Sculpture, depicting a donkey, dog, cat and a rooster, is located in the square in front of the building. Slightly abstract graphic silhouette of the sculpture, created by the brick pattern, interrupts regularity and gives building an extraordinary and modern dimension.
