Meanwhile, the reconstruction and remodelling of the Rundale Palace helps to appreciate every last detail of this magnificent palace that the local nobleman built as a love nest for his lover, the russian Tsarina. One could argue (as, indeed, did the members of the jury) that there was no project as such, but rather a collection of restoration techniques and a painstaking application of heritage preservation. Yet this, once again, is a facet of architecture and an architect needs to know when to speak up and when to keep quiet and, like falsework, to disappear after building the arch (to use a Carlos Martí Aris expression). It is only by safeguarding the past that we can know where we came from, and only by knowing where we came from can we decide where we want to go from here.
