Llegando ya a la Diagonal nos encontramos con la Facultad de Derecho (59), obra maestra de los entonces jovencísimos Giráldez, Subías y López Iñigo. El edificio, paradigma de la arquitectura de los cincuenta, resaltará volumétricamente las distintas funciones del programa con una ‘honradez’ que les llevará a dejar vista la estructura metálica, en resonancia con buena parte de la iconografía del Movimiento Moderno. La ampliación ha sido llevada a cabo por Pepe Llinás. Dirigiéndonos hacia la Zona Universitaria nos encontraremos con el Palau de Pedralbes (60), cuyos jardines se deben a Rubió i Tudurí; con la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas (61), de los mismos autores de la Facultad de Derecho, y con la Escuela de Altos Estudios Mercantiles (62), según proyecto de los arquitectos Javier Carvajal y García de Castro del año 55. En ella, los autores opondrán una serie de volúmenes bajos al edificio principal, concebido como pantalla. En el Campus Nord, de entre todos los edificios levantados en los 90 destacaríamos la Biblioteca (63), de Artigues y Sanabria, y los edificios del Bar y la Biblioteca de Ingenieros (64), de Pepe Llinás. Del otro lado de la Diagonal, el Hotel Juan Carlos I (65), de Carles Ferrater vigila la escena. No estaría de más que, desde la Zona Universitaria, el viajero se acercara hasta Sant Just Desvern para ver el ‘Walden 7’ (66), una de las obras más interesantes de Bofill que hay que entender como alternativa a la vivienda social de los años setenta. En cierto modo, la obra anuncia la tendencia hacia cierto monumentalismo que presidirá gran parte de la obra posterior del arquitecto. Y ya desde aquí ¿por qué no acercarnos a Santa Coloma de Cervelló para visitar la Cripta de la Colonia Guell (67)
Coming down to the Diagonal, we find ourselves facing the Law Faculty building, (59) a masterly piece of early work by the youthful Guillermo Giráldez, Xavier Subías and Pedro López lñigo. A paradigm of fifties architecture, the building’s volumetry brings out the different functions in the programme with an ‘honesty’ which has left the metal structure exposed, in keeping with so much of the iconography of the Modern Movement. The extension was carried out by Josep Llinàs. Moving on in the direction of the Zona Universitaria we come to the Palau de Pedralbes, (60) with its gardens by Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí; the Economic Science Faculty, (61) by the same architects as the Law Faculty, and the School of Higher Commercial Studies, .(62) designed by Javier Carvajal and García de Castro in 1955, where the architects have opposed a series of low-rise volumes to the main bulding, conceived as a great screen. On the Campus Nord, we might single out from among the various buildings constructed during the nineties the Main Library (63) by Ramón Artigues and Ramón Sanabria, and the Bar and the Engineering Library (64) by Josep Llinàs. From the other side of the Diagonal the Hotel Juan Carlos I (65) by Caries Ferrater overlooks the scene. From the Zona Universitaria the visitor might easily go on to Sant Just Desvern to have a look at Walden 7, (66) one of Ricardo Bofill’s most interesting schemes, which asks to be understood in terms of an alternative to the subsidied housing of the sixties. To a certain extent the project is an early statement of that monumental quality apparent in much of the architect’s subsequent work. And having come this far, why not carry on to Santa Coloma de Cervelló to visit the Crypt of the Colonia Güell (67).
