To guarantee the sustainability of this new thoroughfare, it is important to ensure that the subsoil provides good drainage which entails the challenge of incorporating a system of mixed surfaces in the areas planted with trees. The mixed surface system used in leisure areas and terraces comprises porous bases, prefabricated paving with open joins, biodegradable separators and recycled plastic stabilizers with drainage joints (green or stabilized decomposed granite). This technical solution guarantees the stability and accessibility of the paved surfaces while helping to minimize maintenance. Technology has a role in this project but is not intended to be the protagonist. Some of the most important technical aspects include: self-draining surfaces, recycled sub-bases, automatic irrigation, the use of groundwater, LED lighting, sensor and control systems, and Wi-Fi. With this new scheme, Passeig de St Joan has recovered its social value as an urban space while also taking into account key aspects of biodiversity and sustainability.
